About Merindah Farm

Merindah Farm is the two of us, at Yangan on the Queensland Southern Downs, just under two hours from Brisbane, and we breed Miniature Schnauzers and Friesian and Friesian Warmblood horses. We bought the farm in 2015, brought our foundation breeding dogs home in 2017 and had our first litter of puppies in 2018, and we started breeding Friesian Warmbloods in 2022 after starting to plan and acquire our foundation brood mares from 2016. We breed both because we love both, and because the same things matter with a puppy and with a foal, health and temperament first, then type.

Beautiful

Where the Name Came From

The farm did not have a name when we bought it. Shaun's Dad was a minister who worked in Aboriginal communities as a young man, and when he heard we were looking for a name, he sent us a list of Aboriginal words and what they meant. Merindah means beautiful, and it suited the place, so that was that. It is also very close to Meroondah Downs, the property that Kerrie grew up on out in Western Queensland, which felt right as well.

Why Miniature Schnauzers

We went about choosing a breed with our standard checklist. We wanted a dog we liked the look of, that did not shed, that was a size we could manage and take anywhere with us, that was robustly healthy, and that had the sort of personality we wanted to live with every day. The Miniature Schnauzer ticked every box on that list. You can read how we breed them on our Miniature Schnauzer breeding program page, and see the puppies we have available on our puppies for sale page.

Why Friesians

The Friesian is the horse Kerrie dreamed about as a child, the real fairytale horse, and there are not many of them in this country. They are a specialty breed in Australia and a good young Friesian is very valuable, worth a great deal more than a young horse of a more common breed, but that is not why we started with them. We started introducing our first Friesians because they fulfilled a lifelong dream, and because we wanted them. Our broodmares and stallions are on our Friesian mares and stud page, and the horses we have available are on our Friesian horses for sale page.

What We Will Not Compromise On

Conformation and temperament, in the dogs and in the horses. An animal that is put together correctly and has a kind, sensible head on it will have a better life, and will give its family a better life. With the dogs that means every breeding dog is DNA tested through Orivet and Embark and we keep an extensive multi generation family tree so that we are not breeding related dogs. With the horses it means our mares are conformationally correct with excellent temperaments, and we have put them to the highest quality stallions we can find.

Who Does What

Between the two of us we cover the lot.

Kerrie

Clients, training, Midwoof

Kerrie does all of the client contact, the marketing, the website and the social media, and the training, both the animals and the people. She is also the Midwoof, sitting up through every whelping and every foaling and managing the health of the mothers and the babies, and doing the early morning toileting shifts.

Shaun

Books, engineering, the build

Shaun does the books and the budget, and being an engineer, plans and builds the yards, sheds and equipment we need, gets the place ready for visitors, does some of the puppy handovers and takes the late evening toileting shifts.

The daily cleaning, washing, folding and the puppy and stable hygiene we both do, and there is a great deal of it. Luckily, we are both born workers!

What We Did Before This

Between teaching adults for a living and building things for a living we were reasonably well set up for this, although we have both learnt a great deal since. We have always said, animals are sent to humble us and make us learn.

Kerrie grew up on a sheep and cattle property near Longreach, on which her parents also bred Heritage Australian Stock Horses. Some of those horses were among the original classifications for the Australian Stock Horse Society, and we have three descendants of those original horses that Kerrie's mother bred in our breeding program today. Along with the sheep and cattle there were working dogs, starting with Nessie, Kerrie's first doggie love. Kerrie worked in many roles in Western Queensland and later became a trainer with Education Queensland working across Central Western Queensland, teaching school principals and administration staff how to run their budgets and use their finance systems.

Shaun's early life was on the family farm at Wandoan, with a strong background of farming and cropping. The family moved to Brisbane when he was eight, but he has always kept strong ties to his family's home at Wandoan.

He later graduated to become an engineer, project managing air conditioning installations into shopping centres, offices and the occasional high rise apartment building.

Seeking a new purpose, in 2010 Shaun got back in touch with his farming roots for a few years, which is how he met Kerrie in Western Queensland.

Our Support Does Not Stop at the Gate

The decision to breed makes us responsible for the whole of life happiness and wellbeing of all our animals. Our foundation breeding dogs are never rehomed, once their breeding is finished they are desexed and become farm dogs, and they will always have a home with us. Our puppy families can contact us at any time for the whole life of their puppy, and most of them do, mostly about training and feeding and most often to give us wonderful photos and updates about their Merindah Farm Miniature Schnauzer.

Our horse buyers get a training and nutrition handover with their horse and also have access to our foundation handling program if it is needed. We encourage them to stay in contact and call us if they need help along the way. You can read what our families say on our reviews page.

Where We Are and Coming to Visit

We are at 502 Mt Sturt Rd, Yangan, Queensland 4371, though be sure to follow the directions that we send, as using our address in a GPS frequently results in people getting lost. The GPS is not overly reliable on country roads.

We have had our puppy families travel from all across the country to visit us, either to meet us, or pick up their puppy, or later to bring their puppy back for training or just a visit. We welcome visitors and we are very happy for people to come and see for themselves how our puppies and our horses are raised, transparency and honesty matter to us. Visits are by appointment within our visitor hours, and those hours are frequently taken up, so please get in touch and we will find a time that works.

HAVE QUESTIONS?

Common questions

Who is behind Merindah Farm?

Merindah Farm is Kerrie and Shaun, a husband and wife team at Yangan in Queensland. Between us we do all of the breeding, raising, training, client contact and building, and we have run the farm this way since 2015.

Where is Merindah Farm?

We are at 502 Mt Sturt Rd, Yangan, Queensland 4371, on the Southern Downs, just under two hours from Brisbane. Families can drive directly to us, or fly into Brisbane airport and drive out to us. Lovely pet friendly accommodation is available close by if needed.

How long have you been breeding?

Kerrie grew up with her family breeding and training Australian Stock Horses and working dogs, and in a much earlier life she bred Australian Cattle Dogs and Jack Russells while in Longreach. Together, we bought the farm in 2015, brought our foundation Miniature Schnauzers home in 2017 and had our first litter in 2018. We started selecting our Friesian Warmblood mares in 2016 and started breeding them in 2022, when Kerrie's mother's young imported Friesian stallion came of breeding age. We added our first purebred Friesian mare in 2025, and in February 2026 our very own elegant Friesian stallion arrived.

Can we come and visit the farm?

Yes, and we would rather you did. Visits are by appointment within our set visitor hours, and those hours are frequently taken up, so please contact us early and we will find a time that suits.
